Senen Market Condition Inciting Complaints

The heartbreaking condition of Senen Market is inciting complaints from both the market’s peddlers and visitors. How could it not be, because the cleanliness of the market is under-maintained. The stairs heading towards Block 6 is inaccessible because the struts have eroded and rusted over. Not only that, the passageway towards the upper part of the market has also been blocked off because it is perforated and prone to fall.

Yono (45), one of the peddlers in Senen Market, said the heartbreaking condition of the market has gone on since a long time ago. Such condition is worsened by the decrepit roof and the passageway to Block 6 which could no longer be used. “We’re just worried the whole market might collapse onto visitors,” he expressed, Thursday (1/31).

Senen Market Peddlers Representative Association, BM Panjaitan, stated the whole condition of Senen Market is no longer feasible as traditional market. Such condition has been inciting the complaints from peddlers and visitors since a long time ago. “The whole building is no longer feasible. The damage has got so bad that peddlers had to prop some of the structures themselves using makeshift tools,” he revealed.

According to Panjaitan, all Senen Market peddlers are agreed for new building construction. Unfortunately, the plan has not been realized due to some problems. “All peddlers are agreed with the rebuilding of Senen Market, as long as the rental price of kiosks is not burdensome them,” he uttered.

Panjaitan also told that when Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi) visited Senen Market a while ago, he had promised to rebuild the market. But until now, there is no further action from him. “The governor said that he promised to rebuild Senen Market, but there is now further action until now. Basically, we agree with the plan, as long as the kiosks rental price not burdening the peddlers here,” he finished.
